Therapy vs. Life Coaching: What Helped Me Understand My Past and Create My Future

Therapy vs. Life Coaching: What's the Difference?

Therapy helped me understand my past. Coaching helped me create my future.

I think a lot of people find themselves wondering which path makes the most sense. They know something isn't working in their life. They feel anxious, stuck, disconnected, or like they keep repeating the same patterns. They want things to change, yet they're just not sure where to begin.

The truth is, therapy and coaching can both be incredibly valuable. They simply have different purposes, and many people benefit from both at different points in their lives.

I can only speak from my own experience and what I've witnessed in the women I've coached.

Here's my perspective.

Years ago, before I was a women’s life coach, I personally sought out talk therapy for relationship challenges and anxiety. During my time with four different therapists in about a year's time, I explored relationship dynamics and processed difficult experiences. I also had about six EMDR sessions, which helped me process a really painful experience I'd been through.

But quite frankly, I was still anxious as hell afterward. In fact, in some ways, I felt even more anxious because I still felt like something inside me was unresolved.

What therapy did do was help me recognize how much of my anxiety and relationship patterns were rooted in years of not getting the support I needed growing up. I could finally see how those experiences had shaped the codependent strategies I was still relying on as an adult.

I'm genuinely grateful for it.

But if I'm honest...

My understanding of myself changed. My life didn't.

I was still living the same life, making many of the same decisions, and repeating many of the same patterns stemming from anxiety and self-doubt.

Then a friend recommended I attend an online conference. During that event, I heard a coach speak, and I knew in that instant I was supposed to work with her. I just had this intuitive knowing she was going to be able to help me.

From my very first conversation with her, it felt completely different than anything I'd experienced with a therapist.

Instead of asking only what was wrong, my coach asked me questions no one had ever asked before.

What do you dream about?

What kind of life do you want to create?

What experiences do you want to have before you die?

What matters most to you?

Those questions woke something up inside me. Looking back, I can honestly say they marked the beginning of a beautiful new chapter in my life.

During our time together, we explored the beliefs, fears, emotional wounds, and survival strategies that had been shaping my life for years.

But what I needed most was someone who saw more in me than I could see in myself. She believed in me before I fully believed in myself. She challenged me to stop playing it safe, encouraged me to take risks, and reminded me to move toward what truly lit me up.

That changed everything.

I stopped living in survival mode and started becoming the creator of my own life. Instead of constantly asking, "What if it doesn't work?" I began asking, "What if it does?"

It was through that journey that my relationship with anxiety began to change. I realized so much of the anxiety I'd been carrying wasn't because something was inherently wrong with me. It was because I wasn't living in alignment with who I truly was. I'd spent years making decisions to avoid rejection, disappointment, and failure instead of making decisions that reflected who I really was. My body had become conditioned to survive rather than create.

What I once thought was anxiety holding me back, I eventually came to see as my body's way of telling me I was meant for more. Anxiety wasn't leading me toward a smaller life- it was pulling me toward a bigger one.

Since then, I've started a business I love, built a career that's deeply meaningful to me, traveled more, taken risks I never would have taken before, found love, grown my circle of girlfriends, and created a life that finally feels like mine.

Quite simply, deciding to work with a coach completely changed the direction of my life.

My Take on Therapy vs. Coaching

So, if I had to sum up the difference between therapy and coaching, here's what I'd say...

For me, therapy helped me understand myself and heal parts of my past. It gave me language for what I had experienced and helped me connect the dots.

Coaching was different. Coaching wasn't about continuing to analyze why I was stuck. It was about helping me become the woman who could build the life I wanted. It challenged me to take risks, trust myself, and stop letting fear make my decisions so I could finally live in alignment with what truly lit me up.

I believe they each have an important place. Sometimes we need a safe space to process our pain, grieve, heal, and make sense of our past. And sometimes we're ready to ask a different question.

One thing I should mention is that my work as a coach probably looks a little different than what most people think of when they hear the word coach.

I don't just focus on changing your mindset. And while I deeply respect therapy, my work also goes beyond talking things through.

Over the last couple of decades, one thing has become incredibly clear to me: lasting change happens when we work with the nervous system and the subconscious patterns that have been forming our personality and behaviors behind the scenes.

Here's what I've learned...

Insight alone is rarely the missing piece.

I've met countless women who could explain exactly why they felt stuck. They understood their patterns. They could tell me where fear was running the show.

But understanding something and actually changing it are not the same thing.

Our nervous system is designed to keep us safe, not necessarily to help us grow. We don't simply think our way into a new life. We have to help our body experience something different.

That's why I integrate nervous system regulation, breathwork, somatic work, embodiment practices, and healing techniques I've spent the last couple of decades learning. Because in my experience, that's where the gold is. Real change happens when our bodies begin to experience something different, not just when our mind understands something new. That's when change doesn't just feel possible. It becomes sustainable.

At the end of the day, here's what I believe...

Maybe therapy is the next right step for you. Maybe it's coaching. Maybe it's both.

Whatever season you're in, my hope is that you don't spend another year talking yourself out of the life you know you're capable of living.

You only get one life in this body.

My hope is that you squeeze every last drop of juice out of it.
